Clinique Ferrière De Bon Secours launched the first palliative care unit in Mauritius in September 2021 with modern facilities and team of dedicated doctors and specialists. The unit includes 12 rooms, therapeutic baths, and family and kids’ corners to treat all types of patients. Headed by Dr. Vicky Naga, the department is staffed by some of the most experienced doctors in Mauritius who are dedicated to providing the best possible care for their patients.
What is Palliative Care: A Guide to Better Quality of Life
Palliative care is a specialized medical treatment that aims to relieve acute pain and other symptoms associated with a serious illness, while enhancing the patient’s quality of life. It is designed to help patients and their families manage the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of the illness. This form of care is crucial for anyone dealing with a serious illness.
A team of trained professionals, including doctors, nurses, and specialists, work collaboratively to address the patient’s symptoms and stress. Unlike curative care, which focuses on treating the underlying illness, palliative care aims to alleviate symptoms such as pain, shortness of breath, and nausea. Palliative care not only benefits the patient but also provides comfort to their family.
By providing relief from symptoms, improving the patient’s quality of life, and reducing anxiety and stress, palliative care can have a significant impact on the patient’s well-being.
When to Consider Palliative Care
Palliative care can be initiated at any point during a serious illness, even as soon as a diagnosis and while the patient is undergoing treatment. It is not limited to patients with terminal illnesses or those who are at the end of their life. Early recourse to palliative care services has been shown to improve patient and family satisfaction and in some cases, even extend survival.
